A decade after breaking away from the band to pursue a solo career, he is back with his first solo album in an impressive ten years. One of his most eye-catching songs on the album is "Footsteps". It tells the story of a young man going through various ups and downs in life such as fighting depression and difficulty getting along with family members for varying reasons. He also laments the fact that most young people these days are unable to take on difficult tasks and giving up before achieving anything great in life. I can't help but notice that he repeats the line "my life is a blank page, my life is a blank page" throughout the song. It appears almost as if he's desperate for something to fill up his tedious life. If only he knew that only God can fill his life with greatness.The aforementioned track is not the only song on the album about hardships of daily living. Another one of my personal favorites, which is called "Hungry dogs" tells the story of how rich people abuse their power and position by taking advantage of the poor and downtrodden, such as those who live under bridges and beg for food on the streets. This is a serious social problem that exists in some parts of the world. I'm glad someone out there has taken notice and pointed it out. I personally love how he overpowers musical instruments over his deep and soulful singing on some tracks. On one hand, I love this because it makes me feel like I am watching a movie with a powerful soundtrack. On the other hand, it feels like he is trying too hard to make his music sound more powerful than it really is. It sometimes comes off as if he is trying to over-possess his music or use instruments that are not required to make a great song. He does this on "Sapna", another one of my favorites, where he uses a harmonium instead of a guitar even though harmoniums are not very prevalent in Pakistani music. Two of the most prominent instruments used on the album are the dholak and dhamal, which are two types of drums played by striking them with hands rather than with sticks. The way he delivers his lyrics is also very unique and I commend him for it because it often takes a lot of effort to get the point across, especially when singing about difficult subjects such as depression and family problems. He sings in a very deep and melodious voice that is easily recognizable. However, I feel that his voice sometimes sounds too much like that of a 60-year old man rather than a 20-year old one. This might be due to his age or the fact that he has not been singing for long enough to develop a more unique tone in his voice.
